If you have a young boy like me you might immediately recognize our title from the Disney/Pixar film “Cars”. While Fillmore was talking about a classic rendition of the national anthem, today we want to take a look at some classic cars and talk about an exciting event coming up here at Calvary Temple.

This event is especially near and dear to me as I have been privileged to be involved in Finish the Race Ministries for almost 20 years. “What exactly is Finish the Race Ministries?” Well, I’m glad you asked. Finish the Race is an automotive outreach birthed by Pastor Scott and his family. The ministry includes car shows, car races, and chapel services. Finish the Race has toured the country and achieved national recognition in various shows and races. It started back in the mid 90’s at a little car show you might have heard of called “Corvettes at Carlisle.” My first experience with this ministry came back in 1997.  That year our youth pastor Jeff Heglund took our high school along with some of our elementary students up to Carlisle to pass out some tracts and share the gospel. I was 16 years old at the time (now 34) and in fact the guy announcing in the video above was (at the time) the 9 year old elementary student I was paired with. From that images (3)point on I was hooked.

“Why is the ministry so special to you?” Well, in 1998 I would graduate from Calvary Temple Christian School and for about a year my relationship with the Lord was not where it should have been. Oh, I wasn’t involved in what we categorize in our minds as “gross sin”, but my life was one that was lived half heartedly for the Lord. As we know from God’s Word sin is sin from the biggest thing you can think of all the way down to the littlest white lie. In the spring of 1999 the Lord arrested my heart. Even though I had grown up in church from the age of 5, I finally realized that in order to be a true Christian my life would have to be totally sold out for Jesus. So that’s what I did. From that point on in my life things took a complete 180 degree turn.

Enter Finish the Race ministries. Later that year (on my own accord this time) I decided to head back up to Carlisle. At the time I was a young man seeking direction, and I knew this was a place where I could hang out with some great men and women of God. Oh, and I got to see some really nice Corvettes! Little did I know though that this one weekend was going to change my life forever. This show was about more than going up and showing a few nice cars. It was about using these cars in a unique way to share untitled (4)the gospel with a whole lot of people. What I saw that weekend was ministry in action. You see, to this point I knew Pastor Scott was a man of God and a really good teacher, but at this show I realized that he was much more than that. He is a servant of all and one who has a tremendous desire to reach lost souls. He literally stood out there 10 hours a day the whole weekend (4 days) talking about cars and sharing the gospel to whoever would listen. His desire for lost souls far outweighed his affection for nice cars. There were also wonderful men and women like the Delsignore’s (who are the parents of that young man above), the O’Connor’s, and the Heglund’s (our youth pastor and his wife) who had the exact same heart. What a blessing!! What a privilege!! This was the heart I needed to have!!

So for the next 18 years I would be privileged to travel around the country serving alongside these and many other men and women of God. Sometimes I was asked to go and many times I just showed up. I wanted to soak up as much of this spirit as possible and am so thankful I was never turned away. Because of that, this same spirit continues to work in my life today in many1967-grand-sport different areas of ministry with my own wife and kids. From as far north as upstate New York, to down south in Gainesville, FL, to out west in Phoenix, AZ; Finish the Race Ministries has passed out hundreds of thousands of fliers, books, and teaching cd’s. Men and women have been led to the Lord, while others have been prayed for and healed (physically and spiritually). Tens of thousands have heard the gospel. That’s what Finish the Race Ministry is! And while my involvement over the years has changed the goal remains the same. To preach the gospel and share the love of Jesus with as many people as possible.

So come out and join us this Saturday. I promise you will see a lot of cool cars and motorcycles, but even more importantly you are going to see a group of people who love one another and love the Lord more than anything else.  I hope to see you there!!
